So...who else thinks there is going to be an iPhone Nano?
The main complaint against the iPhone seems to be the price point. Looking at things like the widely popular Motorola RAZR, which ended up in the mass market price bracket, I just have to believe that Apple is thinking along the same lines.
A similar form factor as the Nano, except screen taking the place of the click wheel. What else removed? Not sure, maybe no wifi? Limited storage?
Anyway, just thought I would record this crazy idea. I have no inside information, only time will tell if I'm right. And without a photoshop mock up, I'm not going to get tons of traffic :P
Update: Alexa commented and made a Photoshop of an iPod Touch Nano / iPhone Nano:

You're not the only person
You're not the only person who is thinking about this.

I seems to be very likely at
I seems to be very likely at this point. At least, something will be done to shore up the price issue now that the phone is out of the introductory phase.
I was actually thinking
I was actually thinking about this yesterday on the bus, (well with the ipod touch rather than the iphone..) when I saw someone on the b-line with a ipod touch. I started thinking about how large it is in comparision to my 'fatty' nano, and one of the reasons I really really love it is for it's size, and why i dumped my old 30gb ipod (which is also smaller than the ipod touch)
It seems a natural progression for mac to take their touch products and make them smaller? If the scroll wheel was removed on the nano it'd still be quite a bit of space for the display. I'm not sure I would want to type on that small a screen however, so maybe just thinner :)

Iphone?
Ok, Boris thanks for posting the link to the slideshow the other night for me.
Anyway I need to comment about the iphone after reading this post and the Web Directions North 2008 workshops I attended.
I am kinda in awe at the one sidedness towards everyone getting an Iphone. When I was at the conference I had a chat with someone and showed them my nokia n95 (unlocked).
Well the first point is the no battery removable shit. What happens when the Iphone is messed and you need to take the battery out to discharge any static electricity that has built up. If you think I am talking out my ass, here is an example. The Ipod. Apple makes a good computer but the crap with the Ipod and Itunes was too much.
I had a good time at the workshops but I will never own an iphone. There is no GPS. Does it even sync up with Outlook for contacts and the calender like Nokia phones or the Blackberry line? I do not think so.
It looks pretty and provides a whole new world of issues for everyone. RIM (blackberry, i own an old one), and Nokia have been making phones alot longer and know the game so I am not sure why everyone has jumped so quickly on the Iphone bandwagon.
Here is another point. Do you think here in Canada that Rogers, Fido are going to carry the iphone. Seeming thier market is Blackberry everyone is going to end up with iphones from the USA that are hacked.
I look at it from this persepective. Business people here will be carrying Blackberries because of the usability and the rest will stick to small phones.
My next phone purchase will be N95 8gig because I love my current N95. If I buy another bigger phone it will be a http://www8.garmin.com/nuvifone/ when it is out. I own an older Garmin GPS I use for mountaineering. You can drop it and it goes under water. If Garmin puts this much though into their phone well the iphone will be just another toy.
Maybe time for everyone too look at the big picture instead of yet another Mac babysitter product for the mass.
Great post
Should be a blog post of its own :P
Fact is, iPhone is the first mass market extensible smart phone.
Oh, wait, what about YEARS of Series 60 work? Well, looking at the numbers, you simply can't buy any of the interesting Nokia phones here in North America. As posted elsewhere here in the comments, the iPhone has already outstripped the Nokia market share numbers here.
Having used a Blackberry only somewhat, I can't completely comment on its usability. The few times I've tried to do stuff with it, it's been HARD. Some of that may be due to "locking" of features -- wifi, limited Bluetooth (audio only, no pushing of contacts), etc.
So...I am and have been a Nokia / Series 60 fan boy. BUT...I've also identified in the past as the Windows 3.1 of the mobile phone world (that's actually a good thing): the first platform to enable development of third party applications in a very broad market. So, the question is, is the iPhone the Windows XP? Or maybe the simpler analogy is that it is the first "Mac" of phones. If you examine your comments, they are very similar to the early days of Mac -- "serious users don't want a GUI".
Food for thought. I am all for competition, so I hope that Nokia continues with Series 60 development and also innovates in their new Linux-based systems (ref: their purchase of Trolltech, which makes cross platform GUI stuff). What these other players MUST realize is that the time has come where the mobile phone is moving BEYOND the bounds of the walled garden telcos, into the open platform of the Internet, and all competitors MUST strive to engage with network and platform effects in order to succeed long term.
well... if this is anything
well... if this is anything like the last prediction i remember you making about an apple product... the iphone nano is about 2 years away.
I think it's inevitable
Apple will come out with another iPhone form factor....and on the one hand I wonder why because people seem to universally happy with their first kick at the can....so the other hand shows us that Apple likes to throw out perfectly good, awesome selling products (see the iPod Mini) and come out with something even better (initially to them only) that wildly outsell the previous model.
My only complaint with the current one (aside from the obvious lack of Canadian availability of it) is that unlike my previous phones (even my Treo), I'm scared as hell to drop it due to the glass screen...I've been lucky since getting mine last July but have seen a few friends drop theirs....battlescars aplenty.
I could see them coming out with a plastic model (ala iBook/MacBook) compared to the current Powerbook/MacBookPro version of the phone they have now that would be at a lower price point....whether this could be a candy bar style or a flip of some kind, who knows....which for me is part of the fun of Apple - people don't get excited thinking about what Palm or Nokia come out with next....well, maybe Roland does ;)
mmm, I don't think Apple is
mmm, I don't think Apple is interested in the mass market,
check it out the result comparison of Apple vs Nokia....
I don't have Motorola data, but rumours saying they will dismiss the
cellular division.
(data source Quintarelli)
4Q 2007 sales (milion of units)
Market share mobile terminals
Total amount of sales
Net profit
Those are worldwide numbers
And yes, Nokia still makes the most handsets *worldwide*. North American market share numbers show that Apple has *already* outstripped sales of all Nokia products...with only one product.
I love Nokia. I had one Sony Ericsson and then went S60 and never looked back.
But yeah, looking at those numbers, Apple's profit is great on what they are selling now...so why the heck would they want to go after the mass market?
We'll see :P
